What is a sun salutation?
As far as the movement portion of a salutation/Surya Namaskar A, it is a series of flowing movements/asanas that offers strength, balance, and opening of the heart, chest, and shoulders.
Sun salutations originated during Vedic times as a ritual prostration to the dawn. The practice of Sun Salutation was and is known to awaken the body’s intelligence to create energy directly from the sun. In the Vedic tradition, the sun is symbolic of consciousness and utilized in practice of Indian Culture – as yoga also comes from the Indian lineage.
Why 108?
The number 108 is deeply rooted in yoga. Traditionally, malas or garlands/prayer beads, are a string of 108 plus one “guru bead.” These beads turn like the planets around the sun. A mala is used for counting as a mantra is repeated.
Vedic mathematicians viewed 108 as a number of wholeness of existence. This number also connects the Sun, Moon, and Earth. The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters.
In dropping into these 108 series of Sun Salutations, it is an opportunity to connect to the roots, and further within your yoga practice & in connection to our Earth & Ether.
